Top-scoring words by length

Length Highest scoring Points Highest-scoring common word
2 QI, ZA 11 AX, EX, OX
3 ZAX 19 ZIP, FAX, FIX, FOX
4 JAZZ 29 JAZZ
5 JAZZY 33 JAZZY
6 BEZAZZ, PAZAZZ, PIZAZZ 35 BUZZED, BUZZER, PUZZLE
7 ZYZZYVA 43 QUIZZES
8 ZYZZYVAS 44 BLIZZARD

In a real game, playing JAZZ needs a blank tile, because there is only one Z in a standard set. The same goes for most double-Z words. They are still worth knowing for games with more Zs, or when you hold a blank.

High scorers you can realistically play

  • Three letters: ZAX, ZEK, FEZ, FIZ, PYX and WIZ, all 15 points or more.
  • With a Q: QI, QAT, QUA, QUIZ (22 points) and QUAKY.
  • With a J: JO, JAB, JAW, JINX, JUKE and JOKY.
  • With an X: AX, EX, OX, XI, XU and then FOX, WAX, ZAX on top.

Our high-scoring words list shows the best words at every length, and the word unscrambler ranks the words you can make from your own letters by points.

Points versus placement

Face value is only half the story. A 22-point word like QUIZ is worth 66 on a triple word square, and using X or Z on a triple letter square while forming two words at once can score more than 50. When you choose a word, check where the high-value letter will land.
