Word checker

Is it a real word? Check one word or a whole list against our 168,412-word game dictionary and see each word’s points.

Separate several words with spaces or commas.

How the word checker works

Each word is checked against ENABLE, a public-domain word list used by many word game apps. A green tick means the word is in the list. We also tell you whether the word is common in everyday English, and link to its full page when we have one.

Official tournament dictionaries differ slightly from ENABLE, so if a word is challenged in a club game, the club’s dictionary decides.

Frequently asked questions

Is QI a word?
Yes. QI (the life force in Chinese philosophy, also spelled CHI) is accepted in North American and international word games, and is in our list. It is one of the most useful Q words because it needs no U.
Is ZA a word?
Yes. ZA is informal for pizza. It is not in the original ENABLE list but is accepted in current word game dictionaries, so we include it.
Why is a real word marked invalid?
Proper nouns, abbreviations, hyphenated words and words longer than 15 letters are not in game word lists. Very new slang may also be missing.
