Why odd lengths win
Five-letter palindromes outnumber four-letter ones two to one, and three-letter ones are the most common of all. An odd-length palindrome has a free middle letter, so it only needs one matching pair around it for three letters (like EYE) or two pairs for five (like LEVEL). An even-length palindrome needs a doubled middle, like the EE in DEED, and English has fewer words built that way.
