And the famous TYPEWRITER really can be typed using only the top row of keys, along with PROPRIETOR, REPERTOIRE and PERPETUITY.
Key facts
- 3,401 words can be typed with the left hand alone, but only 449 with the right.
- Longest left-hand words: SWEATERDRESSES (14), then AFTEREFFECTS and DESEGREGATED (12).
- Longest common right-hand words: LOLLIPOP and MONOPOLY (8).
- The longest top-row words have 10 letters, including TYPEWRITER and REPERTOIRE.

How we counted
We used the standard touch-typing split: the left hand types Q W E R T, A S D F G and Z X C V B, and the right hand types Y U I O P, H J K L and N M. A left-hand word uses only left-hand letters.
Why the left hand wins
The left hand covers four of the five most common letters in words (E, S, A, R and T), while the right hand has only one vowel-heavy cluster: U, I, O. Without A or E, the right hand has to rely on I, O, U and Y, and that rules out most English words.
