Why English packs consonants together
English allows up to three consonants at the start of a syllable (STR, SPL, SCR) and up to four at the end (NGTHS in LENGTHS). When a word ends one syllable with a cluster and starts the next with another, as in BIRTH-PLACE or WITCH-CRAFT, the run can reach five or six. Vowel runs are rarer: they usually happen in words borrowed from French (QUEUE, BORDEAUX) or in words that join vowels across syllables (CURI-OUS).
In word games
Racks full of vowels or full of consonants are hard to play. Words like QUEUE, AUDIO, EERIE and OUIJA help dump vowels; words like STRENGTH, RHYTHM and CRYPT help when you have none. Use the word unscrambler to find the best play for your exact letters.
